If there’s one attribute that all Irish pubs strive for, be it one-of-a-kind establishments or national chains, it’s that A-word – authenticity. If you’re going to take all the characteristics, trappings and libations of an Irish pub and export them to Scotland’s capital, the experience needs to feel authentic. Step inside Biddy Mulligans and, for those who’ve downed Guinness and enjoyed the craic in Dublin’s boozers, the verisimilitude is unmistakeable. Yep, this is the real deal, or at least as real as it gets short of jumping on a budget airline and making the short trip across the Irish Sea. Biddy Mulligans – or Biddy’s as it’s affectionately known – welcomes a mixed bag of tourists and locals as well as Edinburgh’s sizeable Irish diaspora. As you’d expect of any pub situated on the Grassmarket, Biddy’s isn’t the sort of place you go for a quiet pint at the weekend; it’s a thronged, boisterous bar, the sort of place where if you can find a table, you’ll be tempted to stay put all night long rather than bar-hopping your way along the Grassmarket. Inside the cosy pub, dubbed Edinburgh’s Little Ireland, you’ll find a well-stocked bar serving all the intoxicants one could possibly wish for – plus a few surprises. A generous selection of Irish lagers, stouts and whiskies is accompanied by the usual selection of wines and spirits. It may be the drink that sets tongues talking and stomachs glowing, but it’s the live music that gets the applause ringing. Solo artists, folk bands and acoustic acts can regularly be found strumming their stuff inside Biddy’s, with the tunes running and the drink flowing till late on weekends. Expect a warm welcome, a cold drink and a convivial atmosphere every time you venture inside Biddy Mulligans.

Quite enjoyable pub, with an offer of typical Scottish food and beverages. I did not try the latter though. Sorry guys, but I am Guinness guy! Anyway, the service and the ambience are good, and the live music renders a festive atmosphere.
